Restarting Plans for 2022

We are excited to share that WordPress Community Support updated their COVID–19 guidelines making it possible for us to host WordCamp Birmingham in-person this year.

Now that we can continue plan an event, we have two initial priorities we need to work on:

  • Recruit organizers. There are some vacancies in the organizing team that we’d like to fill. If you are interested, please let us know.
  • Venue and dates. After we shared our postponement update in February, our organizers put any active organizing on hold. We will reconnect with our venue contacts and look for new dates.

When the venue and dates are locked in, we can work on the list below:

  • Tickets. We’ll open ticket sales up again. Everyone who purchased a ticket before was automatically refunded. You will need to purchase a new ticket to attend.
  • Sponsors. Some sponsors were okay waiting to hear what was possible this year. Some sponsors requested refunds. We will touch base with each sponsor asking if they would still like to participate. We will open call for sponsors to fill any open sponsorships.
  • Speakers. We will touch base with each speaker selected for our February event asking if they would still like to participate. We will open call for speakers to fill out our schedule.
  • Volunteers. We will touch base with each volunteer who offered to help. We will open call for volunteers to fill out our schedule.
  • Vendors. We have some ideas and contacts available to us from before when we cancelled. It’ll be necessary to reconnect with and commit with our vendors on our new dates.

We’ve been looking forward to having another WordCamp in Birmingham since the day after our 2019 event was over.

We do hope that this is our chance to make this event happen.

Postponment Update

I am sad that we are not gathering in Birmingham today. We have been looking forward to hosting a WordCamp again since we began planning our 2020 event in October 2019.

After we announced the postponement of our 2022 event, new requirements have been announced making it very unlikely that we can hold an in-person WordCamp in Birmingham any time soon. We are not aware of a venue in Birmingham that is able to legally check for vaccination proof. We are not able to answer Yes to the first two questions on the in-person safety checklist.

If anyone in our community is aware of a venue that we can use, we welcome you to contact us so we can investigate.

On behalf of the WordCamp Birmingham organizing team, we thank you for your support and continued interest. We still look forward to the day when we can see old friends and meet new people in-person.

#WPYall Postponed Until Spring

When we began planning WordCamp Birmingham 2022 in August, our goal was to safely reunite the WordPress community after a long hiatus.

At that time, our COVID infection rates were declining, and we believed we could bring back a small WordCamp that would be safe to attend.

However, in the last 30 days, our local COVID numbers have risen dramatically as a result of the highly-transmissible Omicron variant.

The WordPress community is bigger than any single WordCamp. We cannot in good conscience continue forward with our event, given the current risk, since this decision could negatively impact other in-person WordCamps currently in the planning stages.

As a result, the WordCamp Birmingham Organizing Team has unanimously decided to postpone WP Y’all until a future date in April or May when we can safely hold the event for our attendees.

Can I get a refund?

  • You do not need to request a refund.
  • If you purchased a ticket to WP Y’all, your ticket will be refunded automatically within the next few days. If you do not receive that within the coming weeks, please email support@wordcamp.org

What about hotel reservations and airline tickets?

  • Many airlines and hotels will offer refunds or credits for COVID related travel plan changes.
  • Please contact these companies and request a refund or credit.
  • If the hotel or airline requires proof of event cancellation, you can use this letter.

When will WP Y’all be rescheduled?

  • Our team is investigating dates in April or May, 2022.
  • The final dates will depend on our local rates of infection and venue availability.
  • Stay tuned by subscribing to email updates or following our @wpyall social media accounts.  Both can be found in the footer section at the bottom of the page below.

Will the schedule change for the new event?

  • Our goal is to have the same great event we have currently planned, just a bit later.
  • Our currently scheduled speakers will be invited to speak at our rescheduled event.

A note to our Sponsors…

  • Thank you for trusting us.
  • We’ll be contacting each of you directly with details on how WordCamp Central will be handling your sponsorship funds.
  • We regret the inconvenience caused and would like to do our best to help you with any difficulties you face in an effort to rearrange your plans.
  • Please don’t hesitate to contact us.
